Fine line · Back · Colour · Photo

Two outlined hearts overlap at the centre, each drawn with a fine line that shifts through red, orange, yellow and green. Each heart has a thin stem ending in a small purple mark. The tattoo sits on bare skin above the waistband of dark trousers, photographed close up against a plain background.

Sit down by the proving drawer, love, and mind the flour on your sleeve, because this is the bit where the dough has to be left alone. My grandmother kept this bakery on Calder Street when the ovens were coal-fired and the lamps were still lit at four. She had two apprentices that year, a girl called Ruth from the terraces and a lad called Dev who could not tell rye flour from plaster. They quarrelled from the first morning until the last, and every morning the bread came out better for it.

One February the mill sent the wrong sack, and the two of them had to make the Sunday cob with what was left. They stood at either end of the trough, elbows deep in the dough, sulking. By the time the window went grey they had kneaded one loaf between them without once speaking, and it rose into two lobes that pressed together in the tin like a pair of hands.

Dev had saffron for the Easter buns and Ruth had beetroot for the purple loaves, and in their sulk they painted the cob in strips: saffron, turmeric, paprika, spinach, and beetroot at the tips where the two lobes met. Grandmother cut it open at the counter and laughed until she had to sit on a flour sack. By Easter the pair of them had stopped quarrelling, or at least stopped doing it where anyone could hear.

I never asked which of them she had married. I stopped asking once I understood the question had the wrong shape. The loaf is in a frame by the till now, gone hard and gold, two hearts pressed into one crust.
