Heart and infinity symbol on a wrist

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small tattoo of a heart with an infinity loop woven through it, drawn in a single thin black outline on pale skin. The linework is clean and even, with no shading, and the design sits near the centre of the frame against a dark sleeve and a pink fabric background. The composition is close and simple, focusing on the tattoo.

Dear Ruth,

The lift is out again, so I've been taking the stairs to the fourteenth floor with the shopping and the cat carrier, and I've decided that counts as my exercise for the year. Mr Okafor on eleven says the council will fix it in the spring, which is what he said last spring too. The stairwell lino has finally been replaced, in a green that looks like cough sweets.

Something happened on Tuesday I want to tell you properly. Our Kieran came round with a biro and the back of his maths homework, and he'd drawn a heart, then a line that goes round and round through it, crossing itself in the middle like a figure eight lying on its side. He said it's called infinity. I said I knew what infinity was, I'd been waiting for the number 14 bus since 1983. He laughed so hard he got ink on the sofa.

I'm not one for drawings, but I kept looking at it. The trick is the loop never lifts off the paper. You can follow the line from the heart and it just keeps going, dipping under itself and coming back, and you never once have to pick the pen up. It made me think of you on the ferry, and of Dad's old shaving mirror, and of how we always said we'd write every week and then didn't.

So here is the first letter in a long time, and I'm not lifting the pen until the end of the page.

Love, Maureen
