Black and grey realism tattoo of an ornate heart-shaped locket on a chain with a key and script lettering, on a lower leg.

Heart locket and key on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A photorealistic heart-shaped locket with filigree scrollwork and a keyhole sits at the top, linked by a beaded chain to an ornate key at the bottom. Soft grey shading and sharp highlights give the metal a three-dimensional finish against a dark, textured background. Script lettering sits beside the key, and the design is shown on a lower leg with white trainers at the base of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The pass was closing by the first week of October, and Ilse Brandt had a locket to deliver before the snow shut the road. It was heavier than it looked, cold silver worked in scrolls, with a heart at its centre and a keyhole no bigger than a barley grain. The smith in Vallen had hung a key on a loop of black beads and said only, 'Whoever holds the key must climb.'

She climbed with the chain wound twice round her wrist so the beads would not knock against the stones. At the inn on the saddle, the landlord's wife, Marit, looked at the locket and laughed until she had to sit down. 'That's Gustav's work. He makes one for every bride in the valley and never once gets the key to fit the right door.' She turned it over in the lamplight. 'Open it, then. Let's see whose heart it was.'

Ilse fitted the key. It turned with a sound like a bird clearing its throat. Inside there was no portrait and no curl of hair, only a folded sheet marked with the old goat track that ran below the snowline, and beneath it, in the smith's cramped hand, a single line: the safe way is the one you can find in the dark.

Ilse folded the map back and closed the heart. She gave the key to Marit. 'You'll want that when the wind comes,' she said, and went down the goat track before the light failed, the beads cold and clicking in her pocket.
