Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A heart shape is filled with mandala and paisley ornament, including scalloped petals, spirals and dotted details. A script word sits across the centre of the heart. The linework is fine and even, shown in a single dark blue-grey ink with no shading, against smooth skin on the upper back.

Dear Idris, the drone's scan of the Wellhouse archive came through this morning, and I have spent the whole afternoon under the lamp with it. The sheet is a heart, no wider than my palm, drawn in one even blue-black line. Every scallop and spiral is a channel cut by hand, dotted with the little sluice pins the old engineers used before the water took the coast.

At first I took the swirls for decoration, the sort of thing a clerk doodles while the kettle boils. But when I laid the grid of the drowned levels over it, the curls lined up with the gates, one spiral to each, and the dots marked where the pins went. Someone had built the whole tide plan inside a heart. Across its middle, in a looping hand, is a name: Tamsin. Nobody in the reach has ever heard of a Tamsin on a survey board.

I walked down to the lock house this evening with the copy inside my coat. The wheel still turns if you soak the rust off with vinegar, and I did, with the wind coming off the mud in sheets. I chalked the largest spiral onto the iron, then followed the petals round to the third gate, the one nobody has opened since the drowning.

The gate groaned, the channel took a breath, and the water began to move the way her drawing said it would. I am writing this on the sill with my boots still wet. Tell the council the heart is not decoration. It is a set of instructions, and the last thing on the sheet is her name, which is how you know she meant it to be read by someone who could still feel the tide. Yours, Ottilie.
