Realistic raven with spread wings on a back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large raven or crow is shown in flight across the upper back, with its wings spread and its head turned to one side. Fine feather detail and soft shading give the wings depth, and the talons hold a small curled object near the centre of the design. The ink is black and grey, set against bare skin with dark hair visible at the top of the frame.

The raven came down on the barrier arm at ten past six, the way it had every morning since the thaw, and I kept my eyes on the ledger. Name, vehicle, weight of the load, the goat farmer from Lower Sorrel who always swore his cheese was for his mother. Ink thickens in the cold if the pen rests too long, so I wrote quickly and tried not to listen to the feathers settling above me.

When I finally looked up, it had a curl of wet birch bark held in its talons, tied with green wool the way the bread women tie their loaves. It leaned forward and dropped the bark at my boot like a dog bringing back a stick. My father used to say the ravens on this pass carried the post nobody else would take. I laughed at him the winter he died, and I have not laughed at anything since.
I unrolled the bark on the counter. There was no name on it, only a stamp I knew from the old customs house at Harrow Fell and a date three weeks ahead. Beneath it, in a hand so like my own that I checked the slant twice, someone had written that the officer might cross. Behind me the far gate groaned open for the first lorry of the day, and the bird lifted from the barrier, its wings opening wider than the road.
I folded the bark into my coat, signed the ledger with my own name, and for the first time in nine winters I took the stamp from the drawer and walked out past the barrier onto the snow. The ink was still wet on the page behind me. The raven's shadow ran ahead down the far slope like a second traveller who already knew the way.
