Heart outline with Bill Murray lettering on a leg
Lettering · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A simple black outline of a heart sits on the back of a lower leg, with the words Bill Murray written across the centre in a plain sans-serif typeface. The linework is even and uncomplicated, with no shading, and the ink reads as dark grey on the skin. The leg fills the frame against a purple door and an orange and blue patterned floor, with green shorts at the top and a grey trainer at the bottom.

The tin of conversation hearts had sat on the back shelf of Gorse and Daughter since before the harbour wall was rebuilt, and Mrs Pennock would not let me throw out a single one. Saturdays were mine to fill the glass trays, lifting each pastel heart with tweezers so the printing stayed square. Most said Be Mine or Call Me. One said Ask Dad, which nobody ever bought.

The stranger came in on a wet Tuesday in October, asked for a quarter of the pink ones and paid with a sixpence he must have kept in his coat for years. He read each heart aloud as I bagged it, frowning like a man checking a letter for spelling mistakes. Then he stopped at one and held it up to the window. "Owen Carrick," he said. "That's my name, or it was before I went to sea." He asked whether the moulds had come from the old Padstow works, and whether anyone in town still remembered the boy who used to carry that tin home for his mother.
I told him the moulds had been cut in 1961 for a single batch, and the name was a joke the printer never meant to keep. He didn't laugh. He turned the heart over, saw the faint pink dust on his fingers, and said that was how he would remember it, the sweetness wearing off on his hand. He left the sixpence on the counter and the bag untouched.
After he had gone I found one heart with Owen Carrick on it at the bottom of the bag, slipped in by mistake or by design. I put it in my apron pocket, where it softened against my thigh all afternoon. By closing time it was a pink smudge on my thumb, the name still clear enough to read, and I had no idea where to post it.
