Heart and K monogram design
Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two versions of the same design: a heart with a stylised letter K and curling swirls inside it. The upper version is filled in solid black with bold, flowing linework, while the lower version is a thin single-line outline. Both sit on a plain white background with no body placement shown.

Put the kettle on the back ring and stop fidgeting, because this is the part about the rope, and the rope is where everything turns. There was a bargeman called Kit Harrow who worked the Grand Union when the coal boats still hauled to Brentford, with hands like two coal shovels and a face the weather kept having a go at. He could not write much beyond his own initial, so when he wanted to sign for a load he drew a K, and it came out a bit crooked every time.

One October, with the water gone the colour of stewed tea, a lass called Nell Abbott came down the towpath carrying a bundle of frayed hawser. Her father had gone under at Hanwell lock the winter before, and the rope was his, and she wanted it mended by someone who knew knots. Kit took one look at the splice and laughed. He said a proper eye is a heart turned on its side, every loop going in and coming back, and that a K is just the place where two loops refuse to agree. He worked a new eye into the rope and, without thinking, wound a curl of spare line through the middle of it, the way a swirl sits in an old bit of ironwork.
She asked him why, and he said the heart was for the man who'd tied the rope, the K for the one who'd kept it, and the curl for all the hours they had both spent staring at the water. Nell paid him in tuppence and a heel of bread. Some say they married, and some say they never spoke again, and I have never settled it, which is why I tell it at the lock.
So when the gates groan round and the water comes up cold past your boots, you watch it and think on Kit's crooked K. Now, the kettle.
