Tribal heart design with spiral
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black heart outline with a spiral curl inside its left lobe and a sweeping tendril on the right. The linework is solid and tapers to sharp points, with no shading or fill. The design sits centred on a plain white background with no colour.

You find the first curl on the stairwell wall of Kestrel House on a Tuesday, between the seventh and eighth floors, where the strip light always flickers. It is a spiral drawn in marker pen, neat as a fern unrolling, and the lino beneath it is still damp with someone's bleach. Nobody on the estate admits to it. Mr Dunn from flat 4 says the council has painted over worse. Mrs Adeyemi says it is a kid, and kids are the ones who leave things behind.

By the Friday there is a tendril running up the wall beside it, thin as a bootlace and sharpening to a point near the handrail. You follow it past the bins, past the notice about the lift, past the door where someone's radio plays the same football commentary every night. It keeps climbing, bending a little more on each landing, until on the fourteenth floor it curls back on itself and makes the shape you have seen on birthday cards, lopsided, one lobe bigger than the other.
You stand there with your keys in your fist and think about Dev, who moved out in March without saying goodbye and who used to draw on every surface he could reach. You knock on 14C. No answer. Through the letterbox comes a smell of sawdust and wet paint.
The door opens. A girl of about nine holds a tin of paint and a brush no wider than a pencil. "You're not supposed to be up here," she says. "It's not finished." Behind her, across the hallway wall, the whole heart is already there, black and sharp, with its tendril reaching for the light switch as if it has been waiting for you to notice it.
