Heart padlock with scrollwork on a forearm
Neo-trad · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
A heart-shaped padlock with a keyhole sits at the centre of the design, with an ornate shackle and scrolling filigree curling around it. The lock is shaded in teal and green, while the scrollwork and outlines are rendered in grey and black with soft shading. The tattoo runs down the forearm against a dark asphalt background, with a person's jeans and shoes visible at the left edge.

The key always sticks before it turns, so you jiggle it the way your father taught you, a quarter turn back, then a firm push, until the heart-shaped padlock on the flour store gives up its shackle with a small clack. Chapel Row is still asleep. The gulls haven't started, and the only sound is the tick of the brickwork as the oven you lit at half four settles into its heat.

He bought the lock at a market stall in Margate the year the shop opened, paying more than he could spare because the scrollwork reminded him of the iron gate at the churchyard. The teal paint has worn to bare metal along the top curve, where thumbs have pressed it for forty years. He used to say a heart on a lock was for keeping the good things in, not the bad things out, and you never asked him what he meant, because he would have told you with flour on his hands and a grin you couldn't argue with.
Inside, the dough is waiting in its bowl under a damp tea towel, pale and slack and smelling faintly of the sour starter. You turn it out onto the bench, fold it over on itself, and let the weight of your palms do the work. The bulb above the bench throws a yellow circle onto the flour, and every fold lifts a little cloud of it into the light.
When the first tray is ready you hang the padlock open on the nail beside the slicer, shackle sprung, keyhole facing the room. Outside, the sky over the car park is turning from ink to the colour of weak tea, and the first van is idling at the kerb with its headlights on. You slide the cobs onto the rack one after another, still too hot to touch, and leave the door unlocked for once.
