The gate to Mrs Okonedo's allotment had been padlocked for two winters, and when the council finally sent me the key I found the bramble had already taken the path. I shouldered through with the shears, swearing at thorns that hooked my sleeves as if they had opinions about who was allowed in.

Under the nettles I found the bed she had marked out decades ago: a heart the size of a bath mat, edged with broken terracotta, the middle still bare soil. Someone had written WILD across it in thin, careful capitals, the letters so faint I had to kneel and trace them with a finger. Her note in the shed said she had let it go on purpose. Keep one bit of the place that nobody tames, she wrote, and the rest will look after itself.

I spent a week cutting back, and every evening there was more to find: foxgloves seeded in from the verge, a clump of sweet cicely, a rogue courgette the size of a cricket bat. I stopped trying to make the rows straight. By the Friday the heart had sprung up with campion and cow parsley, and the letters were lost in green.

On the last afternoon I sat on an upturned crate with the shears across my knees and watched a bee work the campion inside the heart. I thought about handing the council a tidy plot. Instead I left the padlock off and wrote Nan's word in pencil on the inside of the shed door, so whoever came next would know where to start.
