Heart with flowers and rope border
Traditional · Black and grey · Flash
A black ink drawing of a heart outlined with a twisted rope border. Three stylised flowers with scalloped petals and dark centres fill the heart, and the open areas between them are solid black. The design is drawn in bold, even linework on a cream sheet, with the paper edge and a pink surface visible around it.

The pawnbroker on Canning Street wanted his window redone before the Tuesday market, so I was up a stepladder under the sodium lamp at half past eleven, a sable brush in one hand and a tin of black gloss balanced on the rung. The rope border was the hard part. Every strand had to turn the same way or the whole heart looked like it was being pulled apart from the edges, and my hand kept wanting to let the twist go slack near the bottom point.

Ruth Hanley had brought the drawing in folded into quarters, pencil on the back of an old ferry ticket for the Birkenhead crossing. Three flowers, scalloped like shells, filling a heart. She stood on the pavement with her coat buttoned to the throat and watched me through the glass. Her husband had drawn it, she said, the week before he shipped out in 1961, and he had never once come back to see it inked. She wanted it done properly, not in the dainty gold leaf the shop next door used for its clocks.
By two o'clock the rain had started and the ferry horn was sounding across the water, long and low. I filled the first flower centre and then the second, and when I came to the third my brush shook so badly that a fat drop of gloss ran down the cream and pooled. Ruth tapped the glass. She said the centres were meant to be dark, that they were the part that stayed shut when the boat was out. So I left the third one as it was, a small wet blot where the ink had gathered, and climbed down before it could set.
