Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black fine line tattoo on the side of the torso shows an upright cross whose stem continues into a heartbeat trace that ends in an open heart outline. The words FAITH. HOPE. LOVE sit in small capitals beneath the design. The ink is solid black with no shading, and the photo is taken close up with the subject's white garment at the top edge of the frame.

The paper tape from the sick bay machine has been feeding through your fingers for six hours, and the freighter is rolling hard south of the Azores. Tomasz, the cook's boy, lies on the bunk with a fever and a chest that will not settle. Mr Halloran, the second mate, keeps asking whether the line is steady. You can read it better than he can: the sharp peaks, the troughs, the small wave between them, like a fence somebody keeps mending.

Your mother taught you to read traces in a Cork hospital when you were a girl sweeping corridors for pennies. She said the heart draws its own weather. You don't believe in much these days beyond the tape, the chart and the radio schedule. The radio gives you a doctor in Lisbon who speaks slowly, then a long silence while the sea hisses through the set. You read him the numbers. He tells you what to give, and you give it, and you wait.

By four bells the trace settles into the steady rhythm that shows on the paper when you fold it back on itself. You fold it without thinking, and the peaks meet at the crease and make a shape like a valentine someone drew in a hurry, a cross running into a heart. Halloran laughs, then stops, then looks away toward the porthole.

Tomasz sleeps. At dawn you pin the strip to the bulkhead beside the small picture of Our Lady that came aboard at Ponta Delgada, and it hangs there with its words of ink on the margin. Keep counting the peaks at noon and again at dusk. The sea will tell you nothing else you need to know.
