The image is a screenshot of a social media post showing the tattoo on skin beside a white garment, with interface elements at the top and bottom.

Brother Aldric had been told the machine would not survive another winter, so he kept it alive the way he kept the bells, with a tin of oil and a patience he did not always feel. The infirmary at Saint Brannoc sat on the last shelf of moor above the village, and on cold nights the stylus on the old trace machine skipped and dragged across the paper. He fed it a fresh strip each evening and sat with the lamp turned low, listening to the small clockwork hum.

Mother Wenna had been carried up from the kitchens three days before, grey as the flagstones, insisting she had no use for fuss. She was awake when he came in, her hands folded on the blanket. "Will it draw me?" she asked. He said it would, and it did, a long flat line that climbed in sharp peaks, then settled into the slow rise and fall he had learned to read like a psalm. She watched the paper feed out over the edge of the table as though it were a letter from someone far away.

Toward dawn the line steadied. Aldric tore off the strip, and because she asked, he wrote beneath it the three words she had taught the novices: faith, hope, love. She traced the shape with her thumb, the upright stroke, the spikes, and then the curve at the end where the needle had rounded itself into a heart. "There," she said. "That's the whole of it. You go up the cross, you climb the hard part, and you come back round to the heart."

He pinned the strip above her bed where the morning light would reach it. When the bell for Lauds rang across the frost, he looked back and saw the needle had made one small, unhurried loop at the very top of the paper, as if the old machine had wanted the last word for itself.
