Heartbeat cross and heart on the ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the side of the ribs shows a heartbeat trace that becomes a cross on the left and flows into an open heart outline on the right. The words FAITH. HOPE. LOVE sit in small capitals beneath the design, with a clean, even line weight throughout. The skin tone is warm and the background is a soft, blurred blue and white, with the design as the clear focus.

Mrs Pask kept the boarding house on Cromer Road the way she kept her accounts, in pencil and in order, and on the Tuesday the doctor's motorbike came up the lane she had the kettle on before he reached the gate. Dr Anand had the long paper roll from the cardiograph folded under his arm like a bolt of cloth. Lodger number four, Mr Ellis, had gone grey in the dining room over his kipper and would not stop saying he was fine.

The trace lay across the kitchen table under the oil lamp. Mrs Pask ran her thumb along it the way she might check a seam. There was the small sharp spike, the low hum between, the rise and fall that looked like a fence in a gale. Halfway along, the line steadied and climbed into a long, lazy curve, and she found herself thinking it looked like a rope being let out to a boat.
"He'll do," the doctor said. "Tell him to stop carrying the coal."
She took the roll upstairs herself. Mr Ellis sat on the edge of the bed with his braces hanging down, looking at the window where the sea was going the colour of pewter. She laid the paper across his knees and pointed at the peaks. "Count them," she said. "Every one of those is a door that opened and shut again." He counted under his breath, then laughed, a short cracked sound. "Seventy years of that, and nobody ever told me it was a picture."
She went back down, found a pencil in the drawer by the mangle, and on the back of the November rent book she drew what she had seen: the spike that became a cross, the long run that bent into a heart. Beneath it she printed three words, slowly, the way the schoolmistress had taught her. When she brought up his tea the next morning he had already traced the words with his thumb, and he asked whether there was room on the page for one more.
