Heartbeat cross and heart on the ribs
Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the side of a torso shows a heartbeat trace that turns into a cross on the left and ends in an outlined heart on the right. The words FAITH, HOPE and LOVE sit in small capitals beneath the design. The linework is solid and even, the ink is black with no shading or colour, and the design is centred on the frame against a plain white garment and warm skin tone.

Sit closer, the dough needs its hour, and so do I. Your grandmother's grandmother kneaded at this same bench when the lane outside was only cobbles and gas lamps, and she used to say a loaf keeps time the way a heart does. You press it, it rises, you press again. Listen to the oven ticking as it heats.

There was a night in the hard winter when the ledger sat open and the figures would not add. Hannah Rudd, who ran the counter then, had a boy with a fever, and the doctor's paper strip came off the machine in a row of little mountains. She copied it onto the back of a flour sack with a burnt stick, then pressed a cross into the peak of the third mountain, because that was where her mother used to touch her chest when the bell rang for early Mass.
The boy lived. Nobody on Dunmore Lane agreed on why. The baker said it was the bread, the priest said it was the Lord, and Hannah said nothing at all but went on working the trays. She wrote three words under the drawing in the careful capitals she used for the price cards, FAITH, HOPE, LOVE, and pinned it above the proving cabinet where the warmth kept the paper soft.
So when the first cart rattles past and the window turns from black to the colour of weak tea, look up at that wall. The line goes up, dips, and at the end it bends into a heart, which is how any good line ought to finish. Now fetch the tray. The first loaves are out, hot enough to burn your fingers, and that is how you know they are done.
