Heartbeat line and treble clef on wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A single black fine line runs horizontally across the inner wrist, forming a heartbeat trace that rises and falls on either side of a treble clef at its centre. The linework is thin and even with no shading, and the ink is a dark grey-black against pale skin. The hand is clenched and the wrist fills the lower half of the frame, set against a blue fleece blanket.

Dear Tomasz,

The Conference pears are dropping early this year, so I have been up the ladders since six with a sack on my hip and your old tin whistle in my apron pocket, because the thrush keeps singing at the top of the Bramley and I cannot stand it any longer. Mum would have laughed. You always said the trees listened better than the men at the cider barn.
Mrs Okafor's boy came up the lane yesterday asking after the rent on the far paddock. I told him the paddock was ours until the frost, and he went off whistling a tune I half knew. I think it was the one from the wireless you hummed at the sink, the one that climbs up and drops back down like someone counting their own pulse. I did not write it down. I wish I had.
The doctor rang on Tuesday. Nothing to worry over, he says, only the old rhythm skipping when I climb too fast. He wants me to take it easy, so I have hired Danny to pick the Bramleys while I sit in the shade with the wireless and a flask of tea gone cold.
Come home for the harvest, love. The little clef on the gate has come loose again and I need someone who can read the notes.
