Heartbeat line on inner wrist
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo of a heartbeat trace runs diagonally across the inner wrist, made of thin, sharp peaks and troughs of even weight. The ink is dark and crisp against pale skin, and the line occupies only a narrow band across the centre of the image. The hand is held at the top of the frame with red painted nails, and the background is a soft, blurred mix of dark and light tones.

Dear Nell,

The chart from the cable ship's engine room came up to the wireless cabin this morning rolled round a cardboard tube, and I have pinned it above my bunk where the damp can't reach it. Chief Engineer Pryce calls it the ship's pulse. Every hour a needle scratches a thin black line across the paper, peak after peak, and as long as the line keeps climbing and falling the old girl is alive and minding her business. When it flattens, the whole crew goes quiet without anyone saying a word.
We lost a stoker off Ushant in the spring. The line went strange for three nights before that, skipping and stuttering, and the second mate swore it was the weather. Pryce said nothing. He began sitting in the engine room with his flask and his pencil, copying the trace into a ledger by hand, as if the copying might hold the ship together.
Last Tuesday the paper ran out of tune. A spike, sharp as a fishhook, then a dip deeper than anything I had seen, and then nothing for a long minute while I stood with my key in my hand. Then the line came back, rough and uneven, climbing like a man getting up off a floor. Pryce came up the ladder two rungs at a time and laughed until he had to sit down on the coil of wire.
I have tapped the good news to Falmouth in plain code: all well, ship steady. I did not mention the fishhook. Some marks are better kept on paper than sent through the air.
Your brother, Tom
