Heartbeat line tattoo on a wrist

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A single black wavy line with three peaks and troughs runs horizontally across the inner wrist, with short flat tails extending from each end. The linework is thin and even, with dark solid ink and little shading. The photograph is black and white against a dark background, with the hand raised and turned so the wrist and palm creases are clearly visible.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the damp on that bench. I'll tell you about the paper drum at Skerrow, because nobody living remembers it turning but me.

Every Tuesday for thirty-one years the keeper wound a clockwork drum in the store below the lamp, and a brass pen sat on a sheet of waxed paper and drew the swell coming in off the Atlantic. Three long waves, then a lull, then three more. Old Ezra Vosper used to say the sea breathed like a sleeping dog. He was wrong. The sea never slept. The pen only told you when it was about to come over the wall.

The winter the Marlowe came onto the Ridge, the pen went wild for two nights. Peaks like church spires, troughs like wells. Young Hannah Dunn was the only one ashore who could read the paper, and she sat up at the kitchen table with a candle and a ruler, counting. She marked the lifeboat's launch on the back of the sheet, then went out in her father's oilskins with the lamp swinging behind her.

They say the line on the paper was the last thing she looked at before the lifeboat turned for home. I don't believe a word of that. I believe she came back with salt in her hair and asked for the tea. The paper is in a frame in the Dunn kitchen now, if you want to see the peaks for yourself.
