Heartbeat line arrow design
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A simple black line drawing of an arrow pointing right, with three chevron marks at the tail and an open arrowhead at the tip. The shaft breaks into a single heartbeat-style spike in the centre, drawn in thin, slightly textured strokes. The design is in black ink only, placed centrally on an empty white background with no body part visible.

Dear Ruth, the big top came down on Tuesday in Shrewsbury, and Mr Calloway has sold the grey mare to a man in Wigan who means to use her for pulling a milk float. I am writing this on the back of a handbill because the ink on everything else has run in the rain.

You asked in your last what is left of the act. Not much. The wire is still strung between the two lorries, and I still walk it every evening at nine with nobody to watch but the chip shop man and a dog that sleeps under the caravan. Dad's bow went to a pawnbroker in Stafford for eleven pounds. I kept the one arrow he fletched himself, with the grey goose feathers he plucked from the back field, and I carry it in my coat like a pencil.
Last Thursday the wire gave a little under my left foot. I felt it before I saw it, a jolt through the balance pole like a missed stair in the dark, and I dropped onto the cable and held on with my knees. Nobody was hurt. The doctor who came out from the village listened to my chest and said my heart was going like a telegraph key, then asked whether I had been running. I told him I had been walking a wire in Shropshire, which is the same thing if you do it at nine at night.
So I am not going with the others to Blackpool. I am staying on the lorry to keep the arrow pointed at the road, the way Dad taught us, feathers at the back and point ahead. Come and see me before the month is out if you can. Bring nothing, I have the kettle. Your loving sister, Nell.
