Heartbeat line with castle and Mickey ears
Black and grey · Flash
A bold black outline drawing of an ECG-style heartbeat line runs across a plain white background. The central peak is drawn as a castle silhouette with spires, and the following dip forms the rounded ears of a Mickey Mouse head. The design uses a single consistent stroke weight with no shading or colour.

The trace on the ship's monitor had been wandering for three nights, and I had started reading it like a letter. Calm water made it neat. A swell off the Azores made it jagged. On the fourth night it climbed into a tall, fussy peak, dropped, and then rose again in two soft rounds, like a pair of ears on a hat. I laughed out loud, which woke Abel Quarrie, the chief steward, who had been pretending to sleep.

'Castle,' he said, squinting at the screen. 'Spires and all. My Ada wanted to see it before we sailed. Said she'd never seen a palace that wasn't made of cardboard.' He had carried a small grey notebook for forty years, and in it he had sketched the shapes of the days that mattered. Every peak had a word beside it. Lisbon. Storm. Ada's birthday. He tore nothing out, he simply turned the pages slowly, as though the paper might still be warm.
The ears were the part that got him. He had drawn them in the margin that morning, after the swell settled, two circles joined by a bridge of ink, and handed the book to me without a word. When I asked what they were for, he said the sea had been rough all week and a man needed something to look at that didn't move.
By dawn the line was flat and steady, and he was asleep with his mouth open and his boots still on. I copied his drawing onto the back of the medical log, the castle, the ears, the long calm stretch between them, and wrote beneath it the time, 04:12, and nothing else.
