The carter's wife said the stones had been counted every spring since her grandmother's time, and every spring there were seven, no more and no fewer. Ask anyone who had crossed the Harrow Pass in snow and they would tell you the same thing: seven grey stones stood along the shelf of the path, each a little taller than the one before it, with the great stone in the middle where the track bent round the cliff.

Dafydd Pryce came up the pass in the second week of November with a mule, a sack of salt and a grudge against his brother. He counted the stones out of habit, the way his father had taught him, pointing with his stick. One, two, three. At four the wind turned and the snow came sideways, and by five he could no longer see the mule's ears. He stopped at the great stone because it was the only thing he could find with his hand.

He sat with his back against it for the length of a pipe. The stone was cold but not unkind, and it hummed a little under his palm, the way a bell does after it has been struck. He thought of his brother, who had taken the farm and the good dog, and of the salt going damp in its sack. Then he found he was counting again, out loud this time, and when he reached the stone on the far side he could feel the path under his boots.

He came down the other side at dawn with the mule and the salt dry, and his temper, somehow, a good deal smaller. The carter at the bottom asked where he had sheltered. Dafydd only said, "Between the big one and its smaller brothers," and went to find his brother, to say he was sorry about the dog.
