Oswin had kept time for the Pell travelling show for thirty-one years, and in all that time the sea had never come in late. The show had shrunk to one green tent, a pony called Gresham with a bad hip, and a rope that Ada Pell strung between two iron stakes on the shingle at the bottom of the town. She walked it at the turn of the tide, when the water was pulling back and the stones were still wet and shining.

The drum was a bass drum with a cracked skin and a crooked brass hoop. Oswin beat it slow, then quicker, and the waves came up the beach to meet each stroke, rising in a hump of white just where Ada's foot would land. Two beats for the flat grey run of the water, a long pause, then one beat hard enough to lift the gulls off the groyne. That was the wave. People came from three villages to watch the sea stand up for her.
Then the council bought the shingle for a car park, and Pell sold the drum to a scrap man for eleven pounds. Ada came down to the beach anyway, the rope over her shoulder. Oswin had no drum, so he pressed his flat palm to his breastbone and counted the way his mother had taught him, one, two, and then a held breath. The sea came in on the third beat exactly, lifting under the rope, and Ada stepped out over it.
