Fine line black tattoo of a heartbeat trace that turns into a wave, sitting across the upper chest below the collarbone.

Heartbeat line with wave on upper chest

Fine line · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A single continuous black line forms an ECG-style heartbeat trace, with two sharp spikes and a central curling wave. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. The tattoo runs horizontally across the upper chest below the collarbone, with the neck and shoulder visible at the top of the frame.

The boat is late again, and the sea has been telling you about it for two days. You have stopped waiting for the horn and started listening to the lamp instead, the way your mother used to press two fingers to a wrist and count under her breath while the kettle ticked on the range.

Every night at ten you wind the clockwork that turns the lens. The mechanism grinds, catches, and the beam swings out over the water in its long sweep. Then the rock shudders under your boots as a swell hits the seaward side, and the spray lifts white against the glass. The logbook says wind south-west, four, rising. You write it in the careful hand your predecessor used, then add a line of your own underneath: the sea is talking to itself tonight.

On the third morning the wireless crackles and a voice from the mainland says the relief boat will come on the next tide if the wind drops. It doesn't drop. You sit on the step outside the lantern room and watch the water heave up in a sharp line, then fall into a hollow, spike and roll, spike and roll, the same shape you have been sketching in the margins of the log since Tuesday without knowing why.

Then the wave comes, not the monster you feared, just a long low swell that lifts the rock and lets it down again, and you realise the sea has a pulse too, and it has kept time all along. At dusk the cutter's light appears at the edge of the grey, bobbing, steady, closer each minute. You lift the signal lamp and let the beam stutter across the water, and for once you do not care who sees.
