Heartbeat line tattoo on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A single black fine line traces an ECG-style heartbeat pattern, running horizontally across the inner forearm with sharp peaks and a flat baseline. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The forearm fills most of the frame against a knitted grey sleeve, and a small partly visible leaf tattoo sits higher up the arm.

Mr Okafor's machine was older than I was, a grey box on castors that smelled of warm dust when the paper ran. I had been told to change the roll and sign the log, nothing more, but the ward was short that night and nobody else was going to walk down to Bay Four at three in the morning. So I threaded the paper through the stylus arm the way Sister Dunne had shown me, and watched the nib start to tremble across the grid.

The line came up thin and black, pricking to a peak, dropping back to the baseline, then a flat run where nothing happened for a finger's width of paper. My mum used to say you could read a whole life in a strip like that if you knew how. I didn't know how. I only knew that the flat bits were the ones I kept looking for, the places where the pen ran straight and stayed there, sure of itself.

When the roll was done I tore off the last foot and folded it into my pocket without thinking. Mr Okafor was asleep with his mouth open, a crossword on his chest. I didn't wake him. I stood at the window with the strip between my fingers, reading it by the car park lights, and found the pattern I'd been looking for: a short cluster, a long quiet, another cluster, the same shape twice over, like someone tapping out a name they didn't want to forget.
