Heartbeat line, date and red heart on upper arm

Fine line · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A thin black heartbeat trace runs across the inner arm, with one section shaded in soft grey, and the date 22.12.12 sits beneath it in a typewriter-style font. A small solid red heart at the right end of the line is the only colour in the design. The image is a close crop of the arm against a plain, softly blurred background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The monitor on bed four had been flatlining its cheerful green line for the better part of an hour when Ruth finally admitted to herself that the machine was not the problem. The problem was the cable, which someone had kinked behind the pillow, and the sensor, which had slid off a patient's finger and gone to sleep in the blankets. She knelt on the lino, hunted it out, and pressed the clip back onto a warm thumb. The line jumped, spiked, settled into its familiar mountain range.

Denise from days had left a card on the desk: a retirement do, a tenner each, somebody's daughter's wedding. Ruth had signed it in the margin, under a joke about the tea urn. Her own hand looked steadier on paper than it felt. Outside, the car park lights buzzed over the wet tarmac, and a delivery van reversed with its little bleep, bleep, bleep that she could hear through the glass.

At four the ward went still in the way it only did at four. Ruth wrote up her obs in the big book, the neat columns of numbers, the times, the initials. When she came to the last entry she paused, pen above the page, and then did the thing she always did, which was to check the trace one more time before she trusted it. The grey stretch was there, the steady rise and fall, a little softer than the rest. Someone had drawn it so the eye would linger.

She closed the book, took her biro from behind her ear, and went to see about the tea urn.
