Ruth had been watching the swell recorder for an hour when the pen began to jump. The ink climbed across the drum in sharp spikes where the sea hit the rock, then ran flat where it didn't, a line her husband Ned liked to call the sea's pulse. Tonight the spikes came closer together than she liked.

Below, the relief boat was late. Ned had gone down the iron steps at four with the paraffin and a torch, and the tide had come over the slipway the way it always did, quietly and then all at once. She pinned a fresh chart to the board and drew a small heart in the margin beside the last peak, the way her mother used to mark the good days in the parish book.

At half past nine the radio crackled. A voice she didn't know said the boat was in the bay and the keeper was aboard, cold and cursing, with a cut across one palm. Ruth laughed so hard she had to sit on the stool beside the lamp housing. Above her the great lens turned on its bearing, throwing its white beam across the water every ten seconds, steady as anyone could ask.

In the morning she took the chart down. The line had settled into its ordinary rhythm, small and even, with the heart in the margin where she had left it. She pinned the sheet to the wall beside the logbook and wrote beneath it, in her best hand, the one word she had been too frightened to write all night: faith. She did not cross it out.
