Four photographs of matching fine line tattoos: the word Always with Deathly Hallows symbols on two wrists, teal and red origami swans on two forearms, watercolour hearts on two wrists, and the word

Matching tattoos on wrists, arms and fingers

Fine line · Forearm · Mixed · Photo

The collage shows four pairs of tattoos on different people's skin, each pair designed to match. The Always lettering with Deathly Hallows symbols and the script love on the fingers are drawn in thin black fine line work, while the origami swans are solid flat colour in teal and red. The watercolour hearts on the forearm and wrist use soft blended colour with splashes of orange, green, blue and pink, and the composition is close and well lit.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The ink was the last of the stores from the old hydroponics bay, and Mira insisted we spend it on something that would outlast the ship. We sat on the floor of the mending room with the lamp turned low, because the power rationing had reached the corridors that year. She drew the triangle first, three lines meeting at a point, a circle inside it and a short stroke cutting through, then the word beneath in the looping hand her grandmother had taught her from a book printed on real paper.

Her paper swans were folded from a page of the manifest, the one listing the first hundred settlers, and she kept a stack of them under her bunk. Each was coloured with dye we boiled from beet skins: teal for her, a red so bright it hurt to look at for me. When we were children on the rotating deck, we passed them through the vent grilles and pretended they had flown all the way to the observation dome.

The council approved her transfer to Lanternfall, the farm module that would detach at the new world's orbit. Once the pods split, the ship's comms would go quiet for a century, so we did what the old stories said pairs did. We made the same mark twice, so that each of us could look down and find the other one there.

When the Lanternfall signal finally crackled through the static, it arrived as a single folded swan dropped by a drone with a camera on its belly. I held it against my wrist, where the faded triangle still sat beside the word, and the two marks lined up as if they had never been apart.
