Script quote tattoos on forearms, hands and ankles

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

This collage combines several photographs of short phrases written in black script lettering on arms, wrists, hands and feet. The linework is thin and even, with the lettering set in flowing cursive on skin, and one greyscale photo shows the words on two fingers. Colour is limited to black ink against skin tones, and the frames are arranged in a grid of close-up crops.

Harold Pyle had lettered shop fronts along the Margate seafront for thirty-one years, and he could write a copperplate W in one stroke of a sable brush without lifting it. So when Rosa Benedetti came into the workshop on Northdown Road with a tin of gold leaf and a folded scrap of paper, he assumed she wanted a name for a boat. She wanted two lines of script for the inside of a hotel window, and she wanted them to look hand-done, not printed.

The phrase was in her own hand, slanted and quick: you and me, times infinity. He asked whose idea the sum was. She said it was her husband's, that he had a bad habit of making arithmetic out of feelings, and that she had told him the sign would cost more than the room. Harold laughed, then found he could not stop thinking about the word infinity, which he had never once had to letter in gold.

He worked for two evenings with the shop lamp pulled low. The trick, he told her when she came back, was that a script wants to lean forward like someone walking into wind, and the thin strokes must be lighter than you think. The loops of the y and the long tail of the final s took most of the second night. When she finally looked, she did not say anything for a while. She touched the glass where the gold had dried, then asked him to hold the ladder so she could check it was level from the street.
