Heartbeat line with dove and heart

Fine line · Colour · Flash

A continuous single-weight teal line forms a heartbeat trace that rises from the lower left to the upper right. Along the trace sits an open heart loop with a small pink flower on its top edge, a simple upright cross on the left, and a dove with an olive branch at the top right. The design is drawn in thin, unshaded linework on a textured beige background.

The ferry to Cullen Head ran only on Thursdays, and Mairead Doyle had missed the last one, so she sat on the slipway with her suitcase until the fisherman's wife came down with a flask. They had been in the same class at Kilbrack thirty years before, though neither of them remembered the other well. The reunion was at the old schoolhouse, now a library with a leaking roof, and the wife, whose name was Nessa, said it would be full of people who had forgotten them too.

They walked up the hill in the wind. At the crossroads by the chapel there was a stone with a cross cut into it, and someone had tied a sprig of heather to the arm. Nessa said her grandmother had always stopped there and counted to ten before going on, the way you would after a bad cough, to give the trouble time to pass. Mairead asked what trouble. Nessa shrugged and said it was never anything in particular.

The schoolhouse was lit by one paraffin lamp and a string of bulbs somebody had borrowed from the pub. A man in a borrowed jacket was reading the names aloud from a register, and when he reached Mairead's he stopped, looked at her over his glasses, and said a bird had come in through the broken window that morning and sat on the piano for an hour, singing nothing. Then it had flown out towards the sea with a green twig in its beak. Nobody had known what to make of it, so they had put the kettle on. Mairead laughed and said that sounded like their class, and the room, which had been quiet, went loud again.
