Infinity symbol with red heart
Mixed · Flash
A rough, sketched black line forms an infinity symbol, with a loose red heart outlined inside its left loop and meeting the black line at the crossing point. The linework is scratchy and textured, with no shading, and the image has a plain white background. It shows a design drawing rather than a tattoo on skin.

Dear Marguerite, The ferry was late again, so I've been sitting on the bollard by the Humber Street slip with your pencil, trying to draw the route the way you showed me. Out along the river, round the buoy at the mouth, and back to the same stone steps. You said it looked like a figure eight somebody had left running. I drew it four times on the back of a chip paper and the loops never closed where they should.

The heart is the part I'm not sure about. I pressed hard on the left loop because that is the side the sun leaves in the evenings, and then I couldn't stop the pencil going red where the lines cross. Mr Oduya from the chandlery saw me and said I'd put the heart on the wrong side of the tide. He's probably right. He has been wrong about nothing except the price of rope since 1974.
Here is what I worked out at the crossing. Every loop goes out and comes back to the same point, so the place where we meet is never the end of anything, only the place we pass twice. Your boat leaves on Thursday's tide and the next one brings it home on Thursday's tide, and I will be on these steps both times, scratching the same figure into the wet cement with a nail.
Keep the pencil. I've left the chip paper under the stone with the heart facing the water, in case the gulls want to read it. Yours, Tom.
