Hebrew words for strength and courage
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows three Hebrew words stacked vertically, each set in bold black script with its English translation printed in a smaller plain typeface below. The translations read power, strength and energy; strength and power; and courage, daring and strength. The plain white background and simple layout make it resemble a lettering reference sheet rather than a photograph of skin.

Gather in, gather in, and mind the guy ropes, for this one is about a man called Benjamin Harrow who could lift the back end of a brewer's dray, and who lost the whole of it in one wet week outside Stockport. You will want to know how a man loses his strength. It does not leave by the front door. It goes out through the cracks, like warmth from a bad shed.

Harrow had a painted board on the side of his booth, lettered by a sign-writer called Mrs Oduya who lived above the chip shop. On it were three words in a language nobody at the fair could read. She had painted them for a joke, she said, and a joke was all they were until a little girl named Peg Wilkins came pushing through the crowd and read them aloud, stumbling over every sound. Koach, she said. Chozek. Oz. Power, strength, courage, she read from the small English beneath, and then she looked up at the big man and asked him which one he was missing.
He laughed. Then he didn't. The girl had put her finger on the board and would not move it, and for once the whole fair fell quiet, the organ wheezing to a stop in the middle of a waltz.
He picked up the iron that night, the one he had let go to rust, and it came up off the sawdust as if it had only been waiting to be asked. Oz, he said, to nobody at all, and lifted. It was not the strength of the dray that came back to him. It was the girl's stubbornness, which, as you well know, is a kind of strength too.
