Hebrew lettering on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of a small black Hebrew word tattooed across the inner wrist, with the skin pale and the background dark. The letters are bold, solid black linework with blocky strokes and a small dot beneath one character. The tight crop keeps the composition focused on the lettering.

Rain had been falling on Pennick Yard since before dawn, and Imre Halász stood under the awning of stall nine with a brush between his teeth, watching fresh paint slide in slow tears down the board he had just finished. Eleven years of signs hung over the stalls of that yard, and not one had ever run. His father had taught him to build each letter from its strokes, heavy at the foot and light at the turn, and never to hurry the little mark that sat beneath the third character. Most painters forgot it. His father never had.

A girl with a sodden canvas satchel stopped at the edge of the awning and read the board aloud, slowly, the way children read in a language they are still learning to trust. She asked what the word meant. Imre took the brush out of his mouth and told her it meant what the stall was for, which was true enough, and she nodded as if that settled something for her.
The rain thickened into the kind that bounces off the cobbles. Traders dragged tarpaulins over their tables and swore at the gutters. Imre waited with his hands in his pockets and his breath steaming, listening for the one sound he dreaded, the soft hiss of black letters giving way.
It never came. He lifted the board onto its hooks at last, and the rain struck the surface and beaded there, hanging on the dot beneath the third letter until its weight pulled it free and sent it rolling clean across the wood.
