Marguerite had been playing the same three chords outside the Leeds train station for eleven years, and the only thing in the world that ever stopped to listen was the ginger tom who lived under the newsagent's awning. He had a habit of sitting on her amplifier, tail curled round his feet, staring at her hands as though she owed him money. Most afternoons he left after two songs. This Tuesday he stayed for six.

She noticed the bass clef first. Someone had chalked a rough one on the pavement beside her case, a fat curl with two dots, and the tom had walked right over it, stopping to sniff the dots as if they were crumbs. When she bent down to rub it out with her sleeve, he stood up on his hind legs and batted at her wrist, and the chalk smeared into the shape of a tail that curved up toward the sky.

She played the bass line that came into her head, low and slow, and the tom padded along the pavement in front of her in the exact rhythm she was plucking, tail held high, until he reached the kerb and sat down, looking back at her with the smug patience of a conductor. A woman with a pushchair stopped. Then a boy with a skateboard. By the time the sun dropped behind the station clock, there were nine coins in the case and a stranger had written the tune on the back of a receipt.

Marguerite never found out who chalked the clef. The tom, though, was waiting outside the station the next morning, and he walked ahead of her to the spot without being asked, tail arched like a question mark, dots of white dust still on the tip of his nose.
