Black Devanagari-style script lettering
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A standalone design of thick black calligraphic characters in a Devanagari-style script on a plain white background. The strokes vary in width, with tapered ends and a long horizontal header line across the top. The image is solid black ink only, with no shading or other colour, and the lettering fills most of the frame.

Tulsi, who ran the goldfish tent, had written the word out for me in a school exercise book, four characters that her grandmother used for the way a thing ought to be done, the straight road under a person's feet. She made me copy it forty times on newspaper before she let me near the board. The header line was the rule, she said. Every letter hangs from it like washing from a line that never sags, and if the line droops, the whole week droops with it.
On the last night a boy from the waltzers stood underneath with a toffee apple and asked what the sign said. I told him I didn't know yet. Tulsi laughed so hard she had to sit on a crate, and said it was the most honest thing a sign painter had ever told a child.
When the convoy pulled out at dawn, I stayed behind to pack the brushes and looked back once. The board was still nailed to the post at the edge of the field, the black letters facing the empty grass and the road the lorries had taken. I have never decided what that means, but I have never stopped thinking it was a good way to leave a message.
