Sugar skull cat with roses on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cat's face with turquoise sugar skull style markings around the eyes and a red heart on the nose bridge, framed by red roses, orange and yellow flowers, purple blooms, dark berries and green leaves. Bold outlines and smooth shading give the fur, flowers and petals depth, and the bright palette of reds, blues, oranges and greens dominates. The design fills the frame of a thigh, with the cat's head at the top and the floral wreath below.

Dear Nell, you will not believe what came in on the 6.40 this morning. Mr Pryce from the signal box found a ginger cat asleep in the lost property crate, curled round a bunch of carnations somebody had left behind for a funeral in Crewe. He wanted to put it out on the platform, but the cat had other ideas and sat square in the middle of the ticket hall, staring at everyone like a magistrate.

Its face is painted, Nell. Honestly. Someone has given it turquoise rings round both eyes, scalloped like the lace on Auntie Ivy's good tablecloth, and a small red heart sitting on its nose. Mrs Okafor from the buffet says it's the sugar skull business her cousin does in Leeds, the paper flowers and the candles for the dead. I told her the cat looked far too pleased with itself to be mourning anybody.

Pryce has been feeding it sardines from the tin he keeps for his lunch. Yesterday the 4.15 was cancelled and we stood about in the cold for an hour, and I thought of you stuck in Bristol with the twins and the boiler. The cat walked along the top of the timetable board, knocking the corner of every notice, then sat down under the clock as if it had been waiting for the last train all along.

Anyway, I have named it Marigold. Pryce says that's soft. I think it suits a creature that has come through a hard winter and still wants its tea. Come up at half term and see it for yourself. Bring the boys, and don't let them near the pork pies. Love, Jean
