The cat came up the lane the week the frost got into the pipes, a black thing with its tongue out as if it had been caught tasting the weather. Dad said it belonged to nobody and wouldn't last the month. Mum put a saucer of milk by the Aga anyway, and by Boxing Day it had claimed the chair nearest the stove and the bottom stair, where it sat watching the door as though a bill was due.

In January the old cherry at the top of the orchard, the one we'd meant to fell since the flood, put out blossom in a single night, pink and absurd against the sleet. Dad went up with the saw and came back down with his cap in his hands, saying he couldn't do it to a tree that was so sure of itself.

The cat followed him up the frozen rows, tail high, and sat down under the branches where petals were already drifting onto the snow. It turned its three green eyes on the house, then on us, and licked its lips. Dad lowered the saw. Gran went back inside without a word and left the kitchen door open, which in our house has always meant yes.
