Hello Kitty and cartoon tattoos on forearms

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

Two forearms are covered edge to edge with many small tattoos, mostly Hello Kitty characters alongside a Smurf, a teddy bear, a rose, cherries, hearts and a banner. The outlines are bold and the fills are flat, in red, pink, blue, yellow and green, with a few black details. The photo is taken close up, with the two arms held together and the wrists and skin tone clearly visible.

The sticker tin had belonged to Dilys before it belonged to us, and by the August the Pier Lane shop closed it held nothing but Hello Kittys, a Smurf with a chipped foot and a teddy bear nobody could name. Marnie and I had spent three weeks trading them behind the chip shop until we ran out of places to put them. Our forearms were the last blank pages left in Saltcombe.

Ray Tallis had inked half the town and disapproved of most of it. He pushed his reading glasses up his nose, looked at the tin, and said the ink would blur in ten years, the way a biro doodle blurs on a school jumper. He said it kindly, the way you'd tell a child the ice cream will melt. Then he asked which one we wanted first, and Marnie picked the Smurf, because she said he looked like he needed rescuing.

We went back every Thursday until the money ran out. The rose took two sittings because Marnie wanted the thorns angrier. The cherries I argued over for a whole afternoon. Ray said nothing, just wiped the skin and waited. By the last week our arms were so crowded that the little faces overlapped at the elbows, and one kitty sat on top of another's bow.

On the final afternoon, with the shop already boarded up behind us, we stood at the pier rail with our wrists pressed together. The sun was low and the ink had gone soft and pink in the glare. Every small face seemed to be looking at the one beside it, as if they had finally been introduced.
