Stacked vintage suitcases on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A stack of three vintage suitcases, one with a smiling face, sits between clusters of pink and blue flowers at the top and bottom. The suitcases are shaded in tan, brown and teal with soft edges and fine detail, and the flowers are rendered in a light, painterly way. The tattoo is centred on the outer upper arm against a plain pale background.

The third suitcase had come back to the stall on Tuesday, and again on Thursday, and by Saturday Maud Pryce had stopped calling it bad luck. Rain drummed on the awning of the covered market and ran in threads down the trestle table, where three old cases stood in their usual order: tan at the bottom, teal in the middle, and on top a brown case with a grin painted on its lid and a wreath of paper roses wired to the handle. Nobody wanted to take it home. Every buyer said the same thing, that it looked back at them.

A young woman in a yellow mac ducked under the awning, shaking water from her hood. Her name was Juno, she said, and she made costumes for the Theatre Royal, and she needed something that looked as if it had been to sea. Her eyes went straight to the brown case. Maud named a price. Juno laughed, then paid it in coins from a purse with a broken clasp. "It smiles at me," Juno said. Maud said that was only the paint, and that the case had arrived from the railway lost property in 1974 with a label tied to its handle, the ink run to nothing.
Juno carried the brown case off under her arm, and Maud was about to pull the awning down when she saw the teal case had been left behind, its strap trailing in a puddle. She lifted it onto the table and opened the lid. Pressed flat beneath the lining was a luggage label, dry and perfectly legible: a hotel in Lisbon, June 1961, and a name in careful capitals that was her own, in a hand she did not remember owning.
She stood a long while with the label in her palm while the rain kept falling. Then she carried the teal case inside the stall and set it on the shelf beside the others, and for once she did not check whether it was smiling.
