The mule would go no further than the third cairn, so Idris unloaded the salt himself and carried it up the last switchback on his back, one sack at a time. At the top of the Scarrow Pass stood a gate of grey stone, and in it the Guard, which was the only name anyone in the valley ever gave it. It stood as tall as a man and as pale as bleached bone, with a helmet that came down over its eyes and a great red bow tied to the top of it, bright enough to see from the village.

The old women said a traveller had made the Guard to keep the road safe and had given it a cat's face by mistake, and that the bow was the traveller's own ribbon, left behind. Idris did not care what it was. He set down his sacks and waited, as everyone did, for the Guard to tilt its head and decide.

It took three sacks, and then a long time looking at the fourth. Then it pressed a square button on its chest with one finger, and the button clicked like a tinderbox. Idris understood it was counting. Every carry he had made had been marked by a click, and the Guard was waiting for him to say how many more he meant to bring.

"Enough for the winter," he said. The Guard tapped the bow, then pointed down the valley, where snow had already started on the far ridge. He took the salt home with the empty mule and did not come back until the thaw. When he climbed up again the bow was still there, as red as ever, and he never once saw the Guard move.
