Henna dreamcatcher on the side of the torso
Other · Black and grey · Photo
A dreamcatcher design with a circular web of fine lines and small dots, a beaded ring and three hanging feathers with shaded quills. The linework is even and drawn in a single brown tone, with the feathers partly filled with lighter brown shading. The design sits in the centre of the frame against warm, softly lit skin, with the navel visible at the right edge.

The third night running, Agnes heard the boy on the stairs before she saw him, his bare feet slapping the cold boards and his blanket dragging behind him like a tail. She did not look up from the hoop. Her fingers were busy with the thread, looping it from spoke to spoke until the web filled with small knots, each one a place where something might get caught.

Tomas said the dreams had teeth this time. A tall man with no face had stood at the foot of his bed and counted the buttons on his nightshirt, over and over, until the clock struck four. Agnes nodded as if this were ordinary news, which for the households on Gallow Lane it was. She had been weaving since she was six, when her own mother showed her how to tie the beads at the ring so they would knock against the sleeper's ear and wake them just before the bad thing arrived.
She hung the finished web above his pillow with three grey feathers, one from each of the crows that roosted on the church tower. The first feather was for the morning, the second for the afternoon, and the third she kept back, pressing it into the boy's palm. Keep this, she said. The web catches what it can, but it cannot hold the things you carry down the stairs yourself.
He slept until noon. When he came down, the frame was bare and the thread was wound neatly on its spool, and on the table sat a bowl of porridge with a single bead sunk in the middle, cooling beside the spoon.
