Henna-style lace design on lower back

Botanical · Back · Black and grey · Photo

A close view of a person's lower back and hips, covered in an intricate design of scrolling florals, fan shapes, a fern-like motif and dangling dotted chains. The linework is solid black with fine dotwork edging, and the design is symmetrical across the lower back. The ink appears dark brown-black on pale skin, and the design resembles henna, so it may be temporary rather than a permanent tattoo.

The paste had to rest overnight, Farida said, or the stain would come out thin and orange as weak tea. She sat at the kitchen table in Bradford with a tin of green powder, a jar of lemon juice and a spoon of sugar, stirring until the mixture thickened like wet sand. Nasreen watched from the doorway with a plastic cone in her fist, its nozzle no wider than a pin.

"Draw it like you're writing your own name," her aunt said. "Don't hurry the curls."

They had a pattern book with its spine taped, but Farida kept closing it. The fan shapes, she said, came from the lid of a biscuit tin her mother had owned in Mirpur, and the fern was a sprig that grew beside the well. The dangling chains were the part she loved best, little dotted strings that hung from every scroll and never quite reached the floor. Nasreen pressed too hard and a blot sat on the first curl like a fly, until Farida laughed and wiped it away with a cotton bud.

When the design was finished, they folded a sheet of greaseproof paper down the middle and pressed it so the halves matched. Farida's hand shook as she traced the second fan, so Nasreen held her wrist steady and let the paste run out in the old rhythm, dot, dot, drop. Neither of them spoke until the last chain was done.

By morning the paste had cracked into a dry crust that flaked away in the sink. What stayed was a pale rust outline, faint as a watermark, and the dots lasted longest of all.
