Ho ho ho script on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a hand with the fingers raised, showing the words ho ho ho in small black script across the side of one finger. The linework is thin and even, with the letters sitting neatly along the finger's length. The image is warm toned with a soft blurred background, and the tattoo is the sharp focal point.

Mind the rope, you lot, and listen, because I'll not tell it twice. It was Christmas Eve, 1893, and the Marguerite Lowe was four hundred miles short of Valparaiso with a hold full of Welsh coal and not one parcel aboard, which is what the cabin boy Tobias had been moaning about since Madeira.

The steward, Mr Haddow, was a thin man with a beard like wet hemp, and nobody had asked him for anything. He stitched a red coat from a spare sail cover and stuffed a cushion with oakum for a belly. Then he practised in the galley. Every time he stooped to lift the copper pot he let out a laugh, deep and rolling, ho ho ho, and the cook swore it sounded like a man tumbling down the companionway with pure delight.

Tobias believed every word of it. At midnight he crept to his bunk and found a parcel tied to the rail with tarred twine. Inside was a paper cone of barley sugar and a stub of pencil, wrapped in a torn page from the ship's log. The handwriting on the page was the mate's, and the mate had sworn on his mother's Bible that he was a Methodist who did not hold with frivolity.

Haddow swore he never left the galley that night. The mate swore he never saw a thing. The boy kept the pencil until it was no longer than his thumb. Every Christmas after, he laughed three times before he would take a sweet, and when I asked him why, he said a man should always leave something ringing in a room after he has gone.
