The stamp at Hallow Bridge had a crack through its rubber face, so every date I printed came out with a faint line running through the middle of it. I stopped apologising for it years ago. Most people at the window were too tired or too wet to notice, and the few who did asked whether the date was still valid, which it always was.

That Thursday a grey hatchback pulled up at half past six with the wipers going. The woman driving handed over two passports and a declaration form. Under purpose of travel she had written, in a loose, forward-leaning hand, that she had nothing to declare except a wedding. Her companion leaned across and said, "She means it. We're not allowed to say it properly until the vicar has signed." I asked for the names, then checked them twice, because it was the only part of the job where I was allowed to be careful.

While I was stamping, she wrote something in the margin, small and neat, and slid the form back under the glass. Love is love, it said, in the same looping script she used for her signature. I didn't remark on it. I'd spent twenty-two years at this window, and I had learned that the things people write in margins are not what the customs service is for.

I pressed the cracked stamp down on the last page, lifted it, and watched the ink settle with its thin line through the date. "Welcome through," I said, and handed back two passports and one form. The barrier lifted, and the hatchback drove on into the rain, with the words still sitting in the margin where the rules did not reach.
