Blessed script on a finger

Lettering · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A hand is shown in profile against a plain pale background, with the middle finger turned toward the viewer. The word blessed is written in a small, slanted, black cursive script along the side of that finger. The fine, even linework is crisp, and the ink is sharp against the skin with the rest of the hand kept in soft focus.

Sit down, the lot of you, before the urn boils over and Mrs Haddow starts reaching for the lid again. Forty-one years since we sat in Room Four under Miss Pruett's copperplate, and I can still hear her ruler tapping the desk whenever somebody let their loops go slack.

She had one word she made us write until our wrists ached: blessed. Not the Sunday kind, she said, the kind you earn by being patient with your own pen. Let the letters lean into the wind, she'd say, like a boat that knows where it's headed. Jimmy Coyle wrote it so badly the b looked like a hook for a coat, and she kept him in at break for a week.

Then came the winter the beck burst its banks and the water crept up the lower lane to Miss Pruett's cottage. Afterwards somebody found a note pinned to the school gate with a drawing pin, in that same slanted hand. It said blessed, underlined twice, with an arrow pointing at the sluice gate. Nobody ever agreed whether she meant the water or the men who came down with the sandbags. Jimmy swore blind it was an instruction, and he's been telling it that way ever since.

So when I say blessed tonight, I mean the word we were made to practise and never quite got right. Pass the biscuits along, Jimmy, and let's see your hand. Still hooked, I see.
