Right, sit down, the lot of you, from Form Four and the teachers who put up with us, because the kettle's only just boiling and I'm not telling this twice. It was the winter of nineteen seventy-one, the year the Methodist hall held its last jumble sale. Mrs Pargeter had a card table in the back room with a two hundred piece lighthouse puzzle on it, and one piece missing from the bottom corner. Everybody said the lighthouse keeper's cat had eaten it.

Her grandson Dennis sat with that puzzle every wet afternoon for a month. He wasn't much of a talker, and the other boys called him slow, which he wasn't. He liked to hold each piece up to the window and see where the light came through. He said a gap is only a gap until somebody decides it's a shape. So he went looking for the shape.

He found the piece in the coal shed, pressed flat under a tin of paraffin, blue sea on one side and a scrap of railing on the other. It fitted so exactly that Mrs Pargeter wept into her teacloth. Nobody could say how it got there. Dennis only shrugged and said the box had been waiting for it.

So when you lot walk past the old hall tonight, look in the window. The table's still there. The lighthouse is finished, and it still has the one bit of sea that nobody bought.
