The hall smelled of floor polish and the same lukewarm squash it had smelled of in 1989, and Janet Pring had already been to the table of name badges twice before she realised she was looking for her own handwriting. Someone had kept the old class register. It lay under a sheet of plastic beside a tray of sausage rolls, the names in faded blue biro, and beside her name, in red, Mr Garside had written a single word in the margin the year she left.

Janet had forgotten that. She had not forgotten the afternoon the coach slid off the verge on the A58 and thirty children sat in the wet grass singing hymns to keep from crying. He had paced up and down with his pen behind one ear, and when she asked him whether they would all be all right, he had said only, ask me again when we're home.

Ray Dobbs came over with a pint and a paunch and told her she hadn't changed, which was a lie they both enjoyed. They talked about the pit that closed, the roof that leaked, and who had married whom. Janet kept turning the register over in her hands, reading the small red word again, the last letter the only one he had bothered to colour in.

She took a biro from her handbag, wrote a line of her own beneath his, and slid the list back under its plastic. Then she went to find Ray's wife, who had sat at the front of that coach and still knew every hymn.
