Infinity symbol with script words on a wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black infinity symbol sits on the inner forearm near the wrist, with two lines of cursive script written inside its loop. The linework is bold and clean, and the shaded band along the lower curve of the symbol adds depth. The tattoo is centred in the frame against plain skin, with a red sleeve and a white patterned cloth in the background.

The last crossing left at eleven, so you stand at the rail of the Pier Head with your collar up, watching the Liver Building's clock glow over the river like a moon someone forgot to switch off. Your little sister's text is still open on your phone. Forty minutes late, it says. Still coming. Always still coming.

You were never supposed to be the one who waited. Years back the two of you made a rule: whatever route you took, you'd loop back to the same stop, so nobody ever got left standing alone. You called it the figure eight. She drew it on a beer mat in the Crown and wrote the words underneath, and you both laughed at how soppy it looked, then kept the mat in your purse for twelve years.
The 86 wheezes up the hill at twenty to midnight. You climb aboard, pay with coins that are mostly lint, and take the front seat on the top deck. Halfway round the loop the driver takes the bend by the cemetery too fast, and the window fogs. Somewhere behind you a lad with a bag of chips is singing badly into his phone, and the heater smells of burnt dust.
When the bus swings round the far end and comes back past the Pier Head, you wipe the glass with your sleeve. Under the streetlamp a small figure in a yellow anorak is waiting at the stop, scanning the top deck, one hand raised. You press your palm to the cold window and she presses hers back. Neither of you gets off, because the route is a loop and you both know it will bring you round again.
