Daisy with script lettering
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A single daisy with outlined petals and a dotted centre sits at the top of the design, and cursive script runs diagonally down from its stem. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill, and the ink appears black with a slight blue cast in the photo. The tattoo fills the left-of-centre frame against plain skin, with the script partly legible toward the lower end.

One March a novice named Tobias came to him with a letter he could not make out, because the rain had run the ink and the hand slanted and looped like wind through barley. It was from his sister in the lowlands. Anselm held the page to the window and read it slowly, word by word, the way he would sound out a Latin name he had never met. She was well, the bread had not failed, she still kept the cup he had carved her, and she would wait at the ford when the thaw came.
The boy wept, then asked whether the flowers in the path could be trusted to tell the truth. Anselm said a daisy knew only the sun and the hour, which was more than most men managed. He cut one stem, laid it flat between the sheets of the letter, and sent Tobias down the mountain at first light with a pocket of dried figs and no instructions.
The next autumn Tobias came back up the track with a woman at his elbow, and she carried a carved cup wrapped in sacking. The flower was still in the letter. Its petals had gone the colour of old ink, and she laughed to see it, because she had written the lines herself and had never once been able to spell the word for waiting.
