Hopeless Romantic script ankle tattoos
Lettering · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a pair of ankles in rolled-up denim and red sneakers, each with a tattoo. The left reads Hopeless and the right reads Romantic, in flowing script with curled flourishes beneath the letters. The lettering is rendered in dark black ink with clean, even linework against pale skin, and the image is framed straight on from the feet.

Dorothea Pask had lettered shop fronts along the Stade for thirty-one years and had never once been asked to paint a word she doubted. She cut the gold leaf that evening under the gas lamp, brushes laid out on a tea towel beside the size pot. "Which goes on the left?" she asked. He shrugged and said the sea would read them both regardless. She painted the H first, a tall loop that leaned into the O, and let the flourish beneath it taper to a hair. Her hand was steady. The boards went up over the netloft door that April, facing each other across a stretch of cobbles so a person standing in the middle could read one, turn, and read the other. The fishermen argued about it for a month. Then a widow from the lifeboat house began stopping there each morning with her shopping, reading the pair aloud to the gulls in a flat, unsentimental voice, as if checking them for mistakes.
The following spring Dorothea hung a third board between them, bare oak with no lettering at all. Mr Anand asked what it was meant to say. She told him it was for whatever a person found in between, and went back to her brushes.
