Red rose tattoos on both feet

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

Two matching roses with red petals, dark shaded centres and green leaves sit on the tops of the feet, each outlined in bold black linework. The red and green ink is saturated, with grey shading giving the petals depth. The photo is taken from above, with brown leather shoes and dark trousers at the edges and a speckled floor beneath.

Dear Ada,

The last of the tan calfskin came up from Leeds on Tuesday, so I have finally finished the pair Mr Haskett ordered for his daughter's wedding. You will laugh, but he wanted roses on the toes, the big old-fashioned sort your granddad used to have painted on the tram depot wall, red as a pillar box and blacked out at the heart. I told him a shoe is not a sailor, but he paid in advance, so I drew them.

I cut the vamp from the same hide as the toecaps so the grain runs true, then pressed the flowers in with a heated iron and a steady hand. Twice I ruined a petal. The second time I sat on the back step with a cup of tea gone cold and watched the rain come over the chimney pots until the light went. I thought about how odd it is that a man will carry a rose on his foot to the altar and never think once about what it costs to keep a thing that looks like it might last.

Then the wedding. Haskett's girl came into the shop on the Friday to try them on. She stood on the rag rug with her hands flat on the counter and said they fitted like they had been waiting for her. She did not look down at them once. She looked at me.

Keep the roses, she said. Make the other pair for Lily.

So I am sending you the pattern. Tell me if the green is too bright.

Yours, Walt
